Caffeine Fix

Things are finally starting to calm down in Central City. The epidemic is starting to let up, and those affected are on the road to wellness. The antibodies Caitlin developed (and farmed in Cisco) were shared with CCPD first and now the department is regaining its ranks from the previously bedridden.

Barry could probably do with a vacation sometime soon, but with Yamato's help, and short stints at the comm from Cisco and Caitlin, The Flash has seen Central City through the crisis.

With a break in the chaos achieved at last, there's only one way to celebrate. Coffee.

Holding the front door to CC Jitters open, Barry gestures Yamato inside with a flourish.

"And here we are, best cup of coffee in Central City."

It's the typical trendy sort of joint, high-tables with modern stools, couches and overstuffed chairs, and a hipster huddled with their laptop in every semi-dark corner.

The air is fragrant with the smells of fresh-ground roast, and behind the counter an espresso machine sputters under the deft control of a barista, while another woman loads fresh pastries into the bakery case.

Yamato shakes his head. "This isn't going to happen. This whole plan you've got to make me a superhero a little bit at a time? Not going to happen."

Barry's reaction to the threat makes him pause for a moment.

"-- I mean, I meant I'd tell him about the bad codenames, but you still haven't told him about nearly dying, huh?" Yamato asks. Then, sheepishly: "Yeah, er, me neither."

Beat.

He spits on his hand and holds it out to shake. "I'll be in your corner when you tell him, if you're in my corner when I tell him. Safety in numbers."

"It's gonna happen," Barry promises. "And then you and I will be total Super Friends."

Or Yamato will get annoyed enough to finally throttle Barry. One or the other.

Realizing what Yamato was actually threatening, Barry ducks his head.

"Oh." Rubbing the back of his neck, just as sheepish, Barry nods. "Yeah, I guess he did ban me from the codenames."

His face squicks when Yamato spits, and Barry shakes his head. "I'll totally back you up, but I'm not gonna spit in my hand."

He will shake though, tentatively, and ready to grab napkins right after.

"Good enough," Yamato says, once they're done shaking, and takes a napkin to wipe off his palm. "I'll back you up as well. We can do a whole united front, teamwork sort of thing, it'll be fine."

They're chance is arriving as Cisco tops the stairs and walks over carrying to over-sized mugs.

"Can you believe what they're charging for three espresso shots?" he gripes. "The lady at the counter threatened to have me sign a waver when she realized I was going to drink all six."

Settling himself at their table he smiles and says, "Hey, guys."

"Totally fine."

Barry turns his head, surprised, then looks into his empty mug.

"I'm going to need more coffee for this... "

Standing up abruptly he says, "I'm gonna go grab one. Yamato? Another?"

He's not running away, per se, Barry just needs a moment to fuel up, and compose, before they do this.

"Yeah, I, er," Yamato says, rather awkwardly, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'll take another of the same."

This is going to suck.

To Cisco, he adds, possibly a little too cheerfully: "Hey! How's my favourite plague vector in the whole world doing?"

"Alright, be right back."

It's all Barry can do to keep a normal speed as he heads back down the stairs.

"I prefer the designation 'Patient Zero'," Cisco informs Yamato.

After Barry heads off Cisco asks, "So, how's the Jitters experience been? Is your heart beating out of your chest yet? Because one of these can totally fix that."

Cisco salutes Yamato with his mug, then takes a drink. Belatedly, Cisco pulls his second mug closer.

"Just not one of mine. These are both for me."

"Why -- why would I even want that sensation, Cisco," Yamato asks, momentarily too confused to be nervous. "What would I possibly gain from it."

[makes_the_toys]

"Because then? You can see tiiiiime," he says, sweeping his hand across the space between them, illustrating the beautiful tapestry that Yamato could be witness to.

"Plus, it's a great pick-me-up when you're pulling all-niters in the lab."

"I worry about you sometimes. Your self-preservation instinct could use some work," Yamato says, finishing off the last of his latte. "You're going to coffee yourself into an early grave, and then who will be around to help GP build his first terrifying mech suit to take over the world with?"

"This from the guy taking knocks on the head with baseball bats," Cisco scoffs.

"Thanks for taking care of him, by the way," he says about GP. "And us too."

"It's not like I willingly put my head in the way of his bat," Yamato grouses.

He goes a little pink at that next part, ducking his head. "You're welcome. I'm just glad you're all feeling better. You had me worried for a few seconds there, kid."

"Fair enough," Cisco allows. "But, a few more bat shots will kill you faster than these espresso shots."

He's just saying.

Shrugging through embarrassment, he waves Yamato off. "I was fine. Or, not, but even though I felt like the chariots were swinging low, I don't think any were actually coming for me yet."

"I already said I was fine, didn't I? And it doesn't even hurt anymore," Yamato says, shaking his head. "It's not like I plan on taking any more bats to the head."

He reaches over to squeeze Cisco's shoulder. "Still, it's good to see you up and around and looking healthy."

"Good. Don't change your mind on that," Cisco says.

Ducking his head a little, Cisco nods. "Thanks."

Trying to turn the subject off himself, and maybe give Yamato a break on the bat thing, Cisco glances towards the stairs then looks back to Yamato.

"So, I ran into Iris outside. Literally. Which, embarrassing." He definitely almost bowled her over on his way around the corner. "You get a chance to meet her?"

"I did. She seems pretty cool."

Beat.

With deep, puppyish innocence: "Very keen on the Flash."

Cisco bites his bottom lip to partially contain a grin and nods.

"Totally."

Shifting on his seat, his expression comes down a little.

"Although, I'm a little bugged with this blog thing. I should be Central City's expert on the Flash. But, because I know the guy and happen to know I know the guy, and have to maintain secret identities I don't get to have the hot blog in town."

Seeing that not-quite-grin, Yamato just offers his hand for a fist-bump.

"Why should that stop you? Takeru runs a blog on Digimon activities while also being a Chosen. He just doesn't use his actual name," he says. "Not that I think you should do that. Going off everything I've heard -- and the stuff I've seen today -- I reckon a turf war with Iris would be hard-fought."

Cisco gives the bump, glad for the solidarity.

"Nah-uh, you didn't see all the fighting that happened with them over it when she started." Them being just about everyone else. Cisco was wise enough to stay out of it.

Sure he knows, but still curious, Cisco squints at Yamato and asks, "What stuff did you see today?"

"Not a huge amount, it was only a short conversation. But she's confident and strong-willed, seemed like. Confident enough to pretty boldly take a stance on the Flash helping out the city even though she had no idea what I'd think, and seemed to think Barry would try to argue with her on it. And I'm fairly certain that if either of us had disagreed, she'd have been willing to make a case for it and argue us down right there."

"Well, considering she's fought her dad, boyfriend and Barry on it, I'm pretty sure she would've taken it to you, too," he says with a laugh.

That might've actually been kind of amusing to see.

"Her writing chops also sort of beat out mine, so I guess I'll just settle for helping out a superhero instead of blogging about one."

Wry: "She'd probably have won that one, too."

Yamato would bet decent amounts of money on that.

"Hey, helping the Flash out might not make you famous, but it's an important job. You're basically just as much a hero as Barry," he adds, fondly.

Smiling, Cisco accepts the compliment.

"Yeah, okay. And you know, I did take out a bad guy too, the one time I was out in the field," he says, then amends. "Well, I mean, I guess I didn't actually take him out, technically he did get away. But still, Cisco Ramon one-time stander-upper to a super villain."

"That's pretty damn impressive, kid," Yamato says, nudging a fist against Cisco's forehead, just lightly.
